Which expiring contracts should Celtic extend?

Celtic were quick to react at the start of this season when nailing down some of the club’s key starters to new contracts. The likes of Matt O’Riley, Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda all signed on the dotted line ensuring their future lies at Celtic for the foreseeable, but the club’s work isn’t done just yet.

There are some more contracts that need addressing by the club soon, and one that the club will have to act upon immediately.

Here are 4 of the key contract situations the club should be keeping an eye on over the next few months:

Joe Hart – Summer 2024

Joe Hart has been one of the Celtic players who have stepped up to the plate over the last few weeks when most have been underperforming.

He has produced some key saves against the likes of Aberdeen and Hibernian that have really made the difference, but has he done enough to earn a new contract?

The club have been looking to improve on the experienced Englishman in the last two windows, and this summer could see the end of Hart’s tenure at Celtic unless some assurances over first-team football are made clear.

Liam Scales – Summer 2025

Liam Scales has been the new start that has come to the fold under Brendan Rodgers, performing admirably in the face of an injury crisis that hampered most of the club’s centre-back options.

He has surpassed what many were referring to as just a ‘purple patch’ and has proven himself to be one of the most important players in this Celtic team this season.

A strong defender who gives his all for the club time and time again, it’s time to reward that resurgence with a new contract this summer.

Greg Taylor – Summer 2025

A player who quite often sees the wrath of the Celtic support levelled at him, warranted or unwarranted, Greg Taylor is a player that many would like to see the club replace in the upcoming transfer window.

Left-back is clearly a problem position for the club and Taylor’s form this season has been very inconsistent, but whilst his status as a first-team starter may have come into question at a number of points this season, Taylor is more than capable of being a backup player for the club this summer.

The club have been rumoured to be looking to improve that position, and it will be interesting to see how Taylor’s contract situation develops at the club over the next few months.

James Forrest – Summer 2025

James Forrest is an undoubted club legend at Celtic, but his quality as a footballer nowadays is a far-cry from the player he was in his heyday in Brendan Rodgers’ first tenure at the club.

Any new contract signed for Forrest would most likely be his last given the fact that he isn’t getting any younger, and late January rumours were indicating that Forrest could have been heading for the exit door.

The acquisition of Nicolas Kühn has pushed him further down the pecking order, so an exit for James Forrest this summer could potentially be on the cards.
