Celtic Women: Top of the table clash against Glasgow rivals

It’s a top of the table clash on Sunday as Celtic take on Glasgow City at the Excelsior Stadium.

Fran Alonso’s side go in to the tie full of confidence after last weekend’s 3-0 victory over other city rivals Rangers, followed by a magnificent 7-0 midweek triumph over Hamilton Accies.

Celtic have extended their gap over third place Rangers to four points, and table toppers Glasgow City are now in their sights. A win would see the girls go top, on goal difference.

Defeating City will be no easy task, something Fran Alonso will be acutely aware of. October 2022 saw City deliver Celtic’s only league defeat of the season so far, with a 90th minute Lauder goal securing the points for City following a tight match.

Fran will be hoping that the home crowd will be the differential this time round, and give the girls in green the advantage. The girls are certainly in excellent goal scoring form, which Fran will want to see continue on Sunday.  Wednesday’s tie saw the girls hit 100 for the season (and more!) with January signing Tasha Flint getting off the mark. She’ll be looking to add to her tally against City, who haven’t conceded in their previous four games.

It’s likely that Sunday’s game could become pivotal come the end of the season. It has all the hallmarks of being “one of those games” come the end of the season review. City are no strangers to league titles, having won 14 in a row before Rangers beat them to the title last season. In the Celtic camp, there’s no talk of title winning yet, they’re very much focussed on taking each game as it comes, and are aware of the challenges they’ll face post-split. But Sunday is a massive opportunity for Celtic to make a real statement of intent.

The girls and Fran have been particularly vocal about the extra boost the fan support provided in last week’s derby game. Sunday presents another fantastic opportunity to get along to the Excelsior and support the girls in their push to top the table. With special family pricing available, it’s also a great opportunity to take along the kids and inspire the next generation. The players, and Fran, are wonderful at spending time with the fans post match, making it a memorable and enjoyable experience for the young fans.

Tickets are priced at £8 for adults, £4 for concessions, or £10 for an adult and child combined, and are available here: https://embed.futureticketing.ie/c/airdrieonians/?ftredirect=1

ACSOM are proud patrons of the women’s team, and wish them all the best on Sunday as they consider their pursuit of a history making season.
