How are Celtic’s 10 loanees performing?

Celtic currently have 10 players out on loan, all seeking out first-team football that they weren’t going to get at Celtic this season.

It is a market the club has utilised for many years, with several players going elsewhere every season in search of those elusive first-team minutes.

Many of the deals are aimed at the younger element of the squad, eager to build up first-team minutes to aid their case for breaking into the Celtic senior team.

Here is an update on the progress of those players currently out on loan:

Sead Hakšabanović

Age: 24 // Appearances on loan: Stoke City (7).

Hakšabanović may be one of the only outliers from this list of loanees, with the motivation behind his departure being completely different from the others.

The Swedish-born winger isn’t looking to get minutes into his legs so he can return to Celtic and break into the first-team. Instead, he was bombed out of the club after publicly venting his frustrations at a lack of game-time on Instagram.

Hakšabanović has featured in every game since joining Stoke City, and was even awarded the club’s player of the month for September, although the Potters did go winless in that month. He got his scoring account off the mark against Bristol City and seems to have been well received by The Potters’ fans.

Adam Montgomery

Age: 21 // Appearances on loan: Aberdeen (8); St Johnstone (33); Fleetwood Town (1).

After an extremely effective loan spell at St Johnstone last season, game-time has been hard to come by for Montgomery ever since he joined relegation-threatened Fleetwood Town.

The reason for this being that he suffered an injury just 35 minutes into his debut for the club in an EFL Trophy match against Tranmere Rovers.

Montgomery was making good progress and will be hoping to bounce back from that early knock.

Liam Shaw

Age: 22 // Appearances on loan: Motherwell (8); Morecambe (39); Wigan (3).

The 22-year-old has only made three appearances since joining Wigan Athletic, with two of those three games resulting in defeat.

The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder did start a 7-1 win over Leicester City’s U21s, grabbing two assists in the EFL Trophy tie, but will be hoping to make more of an impact in Shaun Maloney’s starting XI.

Tobi Oluwayemi

Age: 20 // Appearances on loan: Cork City (2); Admira Wacker (0).

It was injuries that plagued the English stopper in his loan spell at Cork City, and they seem to have followed him to Austria as he is currently recovering from a knee injury.

Signed as part of Celtic’s new agreement with Admira Wacker in the Austrian second tier, Oluwayemi is yet to make an appearance due to the knock he has picked up.

Bosun Lawal

Age: 20 // Appearances on loan: Fleetwood Town (8).

The 20-year-old Irishman has been a key player for Fleetwood Town this season, starting six league games.

The centre-back has also been featuring regularly for Ireland’s Under-21s, gaining vital competitive minutes at a decent level.

Matthew Anderson

Age: 19 // Appearances on loan: Admira Wacker (6).

The 19-year-old was signed alongside Oluwayemi as part of the agreement with Admira Wacker, and has played in every game since he signed.

Anderson has been played in a more attacking role than he usually did for the B team, where he normally turned out at left-back. This more attacking role seems to have suited the youngster, as he has notched up three assists in six games for the Austrian side.

Ben Summers

Age: 19 // Appearances on loan: Dunfermline Athletic (5).

Ben Summers has been building upon his academy Player of the Year award he picked up last season with his loan spell at Dunfermline Athletic.

The attacking midfielder has made five appearances for the Fife side, grabbing an assist for James McPake’s Championship side.

Ben McPherson

Age: 19 // Appearances on loan: Queen’s Park (8).

After impressing in pre-season fixtures, Ben McPherson joined Queen’s Park on loan, but the Spiders have looked out of sorts this season following a promotion charge last time round.

The 19-year-old right-back has been starting consistently and will be gaining valuable experience in the Scottish Championship.

Yosuke Ideguchi

Age: 27 // Appearances on loan: Avispa Fukuoka (26).

Ideguchi only managed six appearances for Celtic under Ange Postecoglou before a long-term loan arrangement was agreed back in his homeland.

With a failed move to Leeds United eralier in his career, Ideguchi’s style may not suit European football.

He seems to be doing well at Avispa Fukuoka, though, but his perfromances are more likely to pave the way for a permanent move back to Japan.

Johnny Kenny

Age: 20 // Appearances on loan: Queen’s Park (12); Shamrock Rovers (34).

Young Kenny was a highly-rated and prolific striker who arrived in Scotland from Sligo Rovers in January 2022.

Kenny’s loan deal at Queen’s Park failed to work out, with his appearances quickly coming from the bench for the promotion-chasing side.

A move back to Ireland has resulted in Kenny being back in among the goals, which will work wonders for his confidence.
