3 Memorable wins against Aberdeen under Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers’ record against Aberdeen is one that can’t be understated with his only loss against the Dons coming in a defeat on the final day of the 2017/18 season.

Throughout Rodgers’ two-and-a-half-year first stint at the club there were some demolitions of Sunday’s opponents and some high-scoring, tightly-contested classics.

Certain players specialised in playing against the Pittodrie side with the likes of Odsonne Edouard and Tom Rogic both relishing the opportunity to play against Aberdeen.

Ahead of Sunday’s clash, ACSOM takes a walk down memory lane and looks back at three classic clashes with the Dons during Rodgers’ first spell as manager.

Aberdeen 0-3 Celtic // November 27th 2016 // League Cup final

This game had to be included as it was the one that kickstarted Celtic’s unprecedented trophy run which saw them win every gong up for grabs in Scotland for four seasons running.

Tom Rogic was the star of the show on this day, as he so often was against the Dons. Rogic’s pinpoint early strike in the 16th minute had the Hoops up-and-running, and a precise strike from James Forrest 20 minutes later had the Celtic end of Hampden park rocking.

A second-half Moussa Dembele penalty added the finishing touches to a perfect performance from Brendan Rodgers’ men.

Whilst the League Cup is often seen as the third best trophy in Scotland, the importance of this in the story of Celtic’s historic quadruple treble cannot be understated.

Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen // 27th May 2017 // Scottish Cup final

An unforgettable day at Hampden Park and a moment which headlines an entire generation of Celtic supporters’ time supporting the club.

Alarm bells started to ring for Celtic fans in the 9th minute as Jonny Hayes’ powerful volley put the Dons ahead in the 9th minute. However, Celtic’s big day, the invincible treble party, wasn’t going to be spoiled at the final hurdle.

Celtic immediately responded through Stuart Armstrong with a goal to match or perhaps even better the one scored by Hayes just 2 minutes earlier.

As the game dragged on, the nerves got stronger, but Hampden Park erupted in sheer euphoria as a goal that lives long in the memory from none other than Tom Rogic secured the invincible treble in the 92nd minute.

With the sheer amount of trophies and success Celtic have had in recent years, it has led to certain moments that would be monumental, seeming like just another trophy. Not this one though.

So many iconic images live long in the memory from this fixture, whether it be Tom Rogic running off to celebrate the winner of Kieran Tierney raising the trophy aloft with a broken jaw.

Aberdeen 3-4 Celtic // 26th December 2018 // Scottish Premiership

An end-to-end Boxing Day affair was perhaps the most entertaining and action-packed game of the three provided.

Scott Sinclair scored the first of what would be a hat-trick six minutes in before a Stevie May penalty levelled up the proceedings.

Sinclair put the Hoops back in front with 15 left to play before a spree of four goals in the last seven minutes created a goal-fest of a finale.

Sinclair completed his hat-trick and a delicious chip from Odsonne Edouard cancelled out goals from Connor McLennan and Lewis Ferguson in a match that provided the thrills, spills and drama that hungover Celtic fans on boxing day definitely didn’t want.
