THE RANGERS TAKEOVER AND THE ART OF “PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS”

Nope, still can't see The Rangers coming.
Nope, still can't see The Rangers coming.

Apologies everyone for the recent lack of activity on The ACSOM Blog. I was in Tokyo for a couple of days catching up with an old friend.

One notable highlight was ascending to the top of the Tokyo Sky Tree. At more than 600 meters tall it is one of the tallest man-made structures in the world.

And yet, even from that vast height, with Tokyo Bay off to one side, and Mount Fuji on the other, inconceivably, I still couldn’t see “The Rangers Coming”.

While I was away, it seems The Rangers Takeover has taken a great leap forward.

The Rangers Takeover is No Closer Now Than it Was Months Ago

Only, it hasn’t, and the mass gaslighting in the mainstream Scottish media to try and make us all believe it has is bordering on the sinister.

Doing some Geoff Capes levels of heavy-lifting in all of this is the phrase “productive conversations”.

Someone from Rangers has spoken to someone from Andrew Cavenagh’s group of “interested investors”. Rangers chose to describe these conversations as “productive”.

Many’s a time in my youth, when I had what could also be described as “productive conversations” with an attractive young lady on a night out.

Suffice to say though, most of the time those discussions went no further!

There’s a big difference between having someone politely say hello to you, and diving headlong into a lifelong relationship.

As far as this takeover goes, Rangers are still very much at the “Awrite doll, can I buy you a drink?” phase of the courtship.

The Americans remain very non-committal. Although Mr. Cavenagh and his friends seem to be enjoying plenty of hospitality at The Rangers’ Board’s expense in the meantime.

These are the facts. But it hasn’t stopped the Daily Record and various other Rangers cheerleaders in the media from giving themselves a victory lap of self-congratulation.

There’s plenty of “see, I told you it was happening” from various Rangers-friendly media sources over the last few days.

My position remains unchanged. Could these Americans be daft enough to invest in a brand as toxic and a loss-making business as unprofitable as Rangers?

Maybe, but I doubt it. You don’t become as wealthy as these various vulture capitalists undoubtedly are by being sympathetic.

Have any of the announcements and subsequent proclamations in the media made any of this any more likely? No, they haven’t.

Much like that pathetic, half-cut, desperate wee man in the corner of the nightclub desperately hoping some cute girl will notice him and take pity on him, Rangers and their enablers continue to deal very much in hope, not reality.

I believe we still have a couple of weeks until season ticket renewals are completed.

Let’s see what happens then.

Many more realistic and less sycophantic sources following this story, myself included, maintain that from day one it has been a well-constructed ruse to keep the natives abated and the season ticket money coming in.

Celtic will, hopefully, have the title secured by the time many of you read this. With, hopefully a treble soon to follow.

Rangers have chosen to play their best damage control card earlier than one might expect in these circumstances.

But in overplaying their hand, they are, I think, just delaying the inevitable.

Time will tell.
