LUIS PALMA MISTREATED AT CELTIC? HE NEVER SAID THAT, BUT THE DAILY RECORD RAN IT ANYWAY

I always suspected the media in Scotland favored Rangers more than Celtic.

Though I must admit, in these first few weeks that I’ve been doing the ACSOM blog, I’ve been shocked at just how many nonsensical, overtly anti-Celtic stories I’ve had to debunk on an almost daily basis.

And today, we have another, thanks to the Daily Record.

By most accounts Luis Palma has done quite well for himself since he joined Olympiakos on loan earlier this season.

Since heading to Pireaus in January he’s shown good form, and rumors began to surface last month of a reputed 4-million-euro option to make the move permanent.

Remember Celtic originally signed Palma out of Greek football in 2023. We paid 4.1 million to secure the Honduran winger from Aris Thessaloniki.

So, perhaps the style of play over in Greece is more suited to his approach. Getting almost the entirety of our money back for a player so far out the first team picture would also be a great bit of business.

Palma is an undoubtedly gifted footballer, but he probably lacks the drive and intensity that Brendan Rodgers demands, and which has seen players like Daizen Maeda thrive in recent months.

Claims of Mistreatment: Not a Word From Celtic or The Player

A report by Central American News Spanish language site futbolcentroamerica, claims that Palma also wishes to stay in Greece and hopes a deal can be completed.

It then goes on to claim that Palma was “markedly mistreated” by Celtic in recent months.

However, crucially there are no quotes from the player himself. Nothing in the report cites any occasion where Palma expressed a feeling of being mistreated by Celtic.

In fact, not a single source is actually cited in the article, it is entirely based on the writer’s opinion, and “what he’s heard”.

In other words, it’s a case of, somebody told somebody who might have a line to the player. It’s, at best, third hand information, which becomes even more garbled when, as usual, the Daily Record runs it through Google Translate and reprints the result verbatim without bothering to fact check anything.

The last time Brendan Rodgers spoke about Palma, shortly before the Olympiakos loan move was confirmed, he praised the players attitude, and application in training, said he was “well-liked” and acknowledged that it’s been hard for Palma with limited game time.

Dare I say, Rodgers was far more complimentary about Palma than he was about Kyogo when he left.

Though Rodgers never directly criticized Kyogo, he did seem clearly annoyed at the player’s sudden departure. He was polite, but also quite neutral in his commentary on the whole Kyogo situation.

If indeed he had fallen out with Palma, I think we would know about it, and I also doubt the manager would have gone out of his way to be as diplomatic and compassionate about Palma’s situation if there was any bad blood there.

Brendan Rodgers is good at many things but concealing his emotions isn’t one of them.

What seems far more likely, is that the players agent, or some other third party who stands to gain monetarily by making the Olympiakos move permanent is trying to drive a wedge between club and player to force the deal though.

And, like the useful idiots that they are, the Daily Record happily plays along.

Facts, evidence, truth, it all goes out the window when there’s a fresh opportunity to put the boot into Celtic.
