GREG TAYLOR TO RANGERS? THIS IS WHY CELTIC FANS CAN’T TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY

Rangers Fan Media have the Crayons out once again.
Rangers Fan Media have the Crayons out once again.

As regular readers of this blog will know, I do love a good laugh at the expense of our would-be rivals across the Clyde.

My dad sometimes grimaces at this. “C’mon son, you shouldn’t mock the afflicted.” Is what he usually says, before giving me a knowing smile.

Sometimes however, the Rangers fans just make it so easy, leave such gaping wide-open goals, that I just can't help but get ripped into them.

The evolution of this Greg Taylor “story” is one of those instances.

Celtic Fans Knew It Was a Joke, Now Rangers Fans Are Running With it

Yes, I am not kidding. Today some Rangers fans’ media outlets are actually saying that Greg Tayor is going to sign for them.

And they’re enthusiastic about the prospect.

I guess maybe Jefte’s 40-million-pound move to Chelsea must be back on? Why else would they seek to replace their Brazilian super star?

The source these fan media outlets continue to cite in their nonsensical ramblings is the notorious “Football Insider” website.

How reliable are they as a news source?

Well, let me put it this way: Football Insider is to responsible journalism what Jeffrey Dahmer is to veganism.

In other words, do not believe a word they say. They are a gossip mill, and a totally irresponsible one at that.

That hasn’t stopped the ever-loyal, ever-gullible true blues from throwing their (considerable) weight behind the notion.

They all seem to think it’s a great idea, and an absolute bargain since it’s a free transfer.

There are just two problems with this.

Firstly, Greg Taylor would never in a million years join Rangers.

He’s got a young family, and it just would not be worth the abuse that both he and they would get from an angry minority if he did so.

Secondly, even if Taylor suddenly suffered some traumatic brain injury and as a consequence completely forgot what Rangers are all about and why no sane former Celtic player would go anywhere near them, the reality is Rangers couldn’t afford him.

Wherever Taylor does go, it will be for a substantial signing on fee, and a significant hike in his current Celtic wages.

He could go to any middle of the road club in England or several clubs in continental Europe, enjoy his football, make a good living for his family, and face none of the stress and anxiety that comes with joining the Dark Side.

I know economics isn’t Rangers’ strong point but I would have thought that even a fanbase as arithmetically inept as them would know this isn’t a deal they could afford, even if the player was interested, which he isn’t.

And perhaps the most damning argument is my final point.

Now, I’ll preface this by saying Greg Taylor has been a superb player during his time with Celtic.

His effort, his commitment and his attitude are above reproach in my opinion, and as I said last week, wherever he goes next, he goes with my sincere best wishes.

But the reality is, Celtic are letting him go because we know we have someone far superior coming in.

In Kieran Tierney we have a world class defender who, with the greatest of respect to Greg Taylor, is an upgrade by every measurable metric.

Is that really what Rangers have been reduced to, lusting after players Celtic no longer need?

Because that is the reality of this situation.

If Celtic truly wanted to keep Greg Taylor, if we really believed he was integral to our squad moving forward, we would have offered him a massively improved deal. Just as we are about to offer to Daizen Maeda, for example.

But you know what, let them have their delusion.

If fantasizing about signing players surplus to requirements at Celtic is how they want to roll, then let them have at it.
