COULD SERGIO REGUILON CELTIC MOVE HAPPEN THIS SUMMER?

I spoke the other day about Celtic’s left back issue for next season. We need someone to back up Kieran Tierney when he returns from Arsenal.
Ironically, I think the answer may lie with Arsenal’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Recent history shows, players we sign from Spurs tend to do quite well up here.
Should Celtic Sign Sergio Reguilon?
Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilon will be a free agent this summer. He has made only 3 league appearances for Spurs this season and would, by all accounts appear to be surplus to requirements.
One wonders where it all went wrong for the one-time Real Madrid prodigy. However, his career has definitely been on the wrong trajectory since he left The Bernabeu.
At 28 years old, Reguilon should be entering the prime of his career, not wasting away in the reserves. Could Celtic do for him what they’ve already done for Cameron Carter Vickers and Joe Hart?
The similarities are definitely there.
So, what kind of player is Sergio Reguilon?
Reguilon started his Real Madrid career at the age of 8, when he joined the club’s youth set up.
He was promoted to the Real Madrid first team squad in 2018 by then coach Julen Lopetegui. Big things were expected of the young left back. He played 14 times for Real that season.
The following season Reguilon joined Sevilla on a one year loan. He played in integral part in the team’s 2019-2020 Europa League triumph.
This caught the attention of the English Premier League.
Unfortunately for Reguilon, like so many great players before him, the mediocrity of the EPL outside its top 5 teams proved his downfall.
After two seasons at Spurs, Reguilon fell out of favor, and joined Atletico Madrid on loan. He made only 12 appearances during his year long spell back in Madrid.

Further loan moves to Manchester United (as emergency cover for Luke Shaw) and then Brentford also didn’t lead to any permanent deals. He now has just 3 months left on his Spurs contract.
It seems highly unlikely that Real Madrid will trigger the reputed 27.5 million pound buy-back clause they have in the contract they signed with Tottenham to sell Reguilon back in 2020.
So, there we have it, a left-back who was a full Spanish international, once valued at close to 30 million pounds and who has played for some top European clubs, and Spurs.
He’ll be available on a free transfer this summer. With plenty of money in the bank, I’d also suggest that maybe, he’d be amenable to taking a pay cut, if it meant a chance to play European football again and come to a club where he will be appreciated by the fans.
To me, this seems very similar to the Joe Hart/Cameron Carter-Vickers situation. We know this guy is a player, we know Tottenham don’t rate him. Wherever he goes next, it needs to be somewhere where he can prove he still has what it takes to perform at the top level.
Wages are the obvious stumbling block, but again, that is something that could, possibly be worked around, if the player has the right attitude.
And attitude will be the ultimate deal breaker in this one.
If Sergio Reguilon wants to make more money, he’ll go and sign for some other middle of the road English club and never win another trophy for the rest of his career.
If he wants to win things, to possibly play in the Champions League again, and to restore his lost pride, then Celtic is the perfect platform to do so.
Personally, I think he’s worth a punt.
