CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS EP // LA VITA NUOVA // BUY HERE
Christine and the Queens unveiled surprise new EP, La vita nuova, on 10 April. The EP arrived with an accompanying short film of the same name, imagined by Christine and featuring the EP’s five new songs in as many sequences. The 14-minute film is an inward journey that sees the artist invest Opéra Garnier, the world famous Paris opera house, filling it with stories of ghosts and mythical creatures. Through the lens of long-time collaborator Colin Solal Cardo (Robyn, Charli XCX) and with choreography by Ryan Heffington (VMA Award 2014, Grammy Award nominated), Christine and her dancers appear in succession on the Opéra rooftop, its grand stage and most secret recesses, culminating into a feverish moment with Caroline Polachek, a collaborator on the EP’s title track.

The latest offering from his long-awaited sequel album Non Canon II, finds the alias of Oxygen Thief’s Barry Dolan both ruminating on lost themes, while writing an epilogue to the track Eponymous; one of the many highlights of his 2016 debut. Marrying impassioned acoustic strum with rich, layered chamber-pop orchestrations, Self Untitled sees Dolan’s alt-folk alter-ego coming into its own. Reminiscent of Radiohead’s High and Dry-era pensive post-rock or the relefective and restrained compositions US masters like Black Francis or Elliot Smith, the single is one of many melancholy marvels to be admired on his upcoming second LP.

Forty Days And Forty Nights is the latest track to be taken from The Blinders’ upcoming album Fantasies Of A Stay At Home Psychopath, out on May 8th via Modern Sky UK. Opening to an intoxicating blend of driving drums and forebodingly warped guitars, the track is a sinister and visceral account of the collapse of a relationship into murderous animosity, which pulsates between passages of calm and chaos. The track premiered with Steve Lamacq on BBC 6Music and has since garnered support from Jack Saunders at Radio 1, John Kennedy at Radio X and Chris Hawkins at 6Music.
