3 times Brendan Rodgers came up trumps against Motherwell

Celtic get ready to face off against Stuart Kettlewell’s Motherwell side this afternoon and will be up against a club that Brendan Rodgers has historically performed well against.

Whether it be a big game situation or just another day at Celtic Park, Rodgers’ Celtic side of old would always turn up against the Steelmen, boasting a record of nine wins out of 12 meetings between the pair.

Celtic haven’t lost to the Lanarkshire side since 2015, with some massive wins along the way to maintaining that impressive unbeaten streak.

Here is a selection of three of the most memorable encounters from Rodgers’ first tenure as manager between Celtic and Motherwell:

Motherwell 3-4 Celtic // 3rd December 2016 // Scottish Premiership

It was a back-and-forth encounter when the two sides met in Rodgers’ first season in Scotland. Motherwell’s talisman at the time Louis Moult scored a brace to put the home side two goals to the good after just 35 minutes.

Rodgers must have delivered an inspired team talk at half-time as Celtic came out of the blocks hot in the second-half, with goals from Callum McGregor and Patrick Roberts bringing Celtic level with 20 minutes to go.

Lionel Ainsworth struck just one minute after Roberts’ leveller to put the Steelmen back ahead, but not before Stuart Armstrong was on hand just one minute later to bring Celtic level for the second time that afternoon.

It would take until the 90th minute for the winning goal when the Wizard of Oz produced another game-winning moment of magic as Tom Rogic scored a brilliant, powerful strike to secure the points for Celtic.

Motherwell 0-2 Celtic // 26th November 2017 // Scottish League Cup final

It was on this day that Brendan Rodgers became the first Celtic manager since the great Jock Stein to win four consecutive domestic trophies.

It was a goalless first-half as Motherwell remained competitive but Stephen Robinson’s side would be undone by a fantastic James Forrest goal which got the scoring underway.

Motherwell plugged away as they went in search of an equaliser but any hopes of getting back into the game were dashed when Cedric Kipre was given his marching orders for a foul on Scott Sinclair which resulted in a penalty for Celtic.#

Moussa Dembele was the man on hand to convert from the spot, slotting away a cool penalty to secure the League Cup for the Parkhead side.

Celtic 2-0 Motherwell // 19th May 2018 // Scottish Cup final

Motherwell would return, seeking revenge, later on that season as Robinson’s side faced off against Celtic in the Scottish Cup final. Despite ‘Well’s efforts, it would be the same result once again as Celtic secured a double-treble, the first Scottish side to do so.

McGregor opened the scoring early on, slamming home an incredible volley on 11 minutes in what was one of the best Celtic goals in recent years. Olivier Ntcham was there to add the second for Celtic, a powerful low drive, and followed up a great goal with an even better acrobatic celebration.
